The Universe: “Start Here, Protect the Family.”

On March 27, 2017 I participated in the Northwest Vista’s Faculty Art Show. My entry consisted of a triptych entitled The Universe: “Start here, protect the family.”

I chose to create a family unit using Mayan characters and adapted glyphs to return to the roots of my own culture. In this way the family, devoid of technological devices, can be seen in its most pure form.

STORYTELLING AND MASKS

On October 1, 2009, I had a special exhibition at the Jump-Start Art Gallery entitled Storytelling and Masks. This exhibition focused on the art of storytelling through masks and mask-making. Masks have served many purposes throughout history, meeting the needs of many cultures as part of special rituals, religious ceremonies, performance events, protective gear for battle and sports, and special disguises.

The masks displayed consisted of a variety of decorative masks, to large functional masks and helmets as part of the wardrobe for a play I adapted for the stage in 2007 called Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema. This production was based on an African folktale and was performed by and for middle school students.

As part of the exhibition, I directed an impromptu story narration, encouraging audience participation to deliver the final performance.

Women’s Intuition: The Dual Nature of the Female Soul”

On July 3, 2008 I had an artist exhibition and performance entitled “Women’s Intuition: The Dual Nature of the Female soul” held at the Jump Start Theatre in the Blue Star Complex – San Antonio, Texas.

This project dealt with the four seasons of a woman’s life focusing on the way women feel, and the way women instinctually live their life cycles in their own unique and creative way.

The live performance that accompanied the exhibition consisted of writings and drawings that brought out the story of the tamed and unbridled woman archetype behind the visual images we as women create.

RELATIONSHIPS AND THE FIGURE

On October 3, 2012, I had a solo exhibition at the Calle Ocho Gallery and Dance Hall in San Antonio, Texas. This body of work consisted of a variety of artworks depicting women’s emotions using Easter Egg food dyes and stitched figures on paper comprising a body of mixed-media collages as part of a focus on Human Relationships.
